Apparently one cannot have an evening gown altered unless one brings in the shoes that one intends to wear with it.

Except one doesn't yet own the shoes, because one has very wide feet, which makes shoe shopping a special sort of hell.

And here I was, thinking I was clever for bringing in the intended undergarments.

This is the part where I get gripey at all of the boys, who get to simply go out and rent a tux.

I had the same problem with a bridesmaid's dress I had to wear. Wide feet, undergarments, and all.

If it's at a bridal shop, they can usually squeeze you into shoes that are approximately the right height for five minutes, so that they can do the alterations. That's what I did.

It is a bridal shop (I found a great deal on a discontinued gown there), but I don't yet have any idea what "approximately the right height" will be as of yet.

well... I guess you could just aim for having the dress land at your ankles... Then it doesn't matter how tall the heels are...
I guess I find all the dress up nonsense sort of stupid... why do men get it so easy anyway?

yes, but, last I knew, we had to keep renting the tux, while women get the chance to wear dresses again.

Of course, being a former Officer in a Masonic Lodge put me in the unique position of owning my own tux.

Okay, I will do that in re the event thingy.

I actually bought my tux up in central square. Cheap place, very ethnic name (middle european, or Jewish). Got a vintage waistcoat (which I will have you know, I pronounce as weskit) and studs (I collect cufflinks and cuff buttons, vintage masonic ones especially), and I own a pocket watch and double t chain.

When I wear a tux, I'm ALL dudded up.

I will find you something to wear it at. Might I suggest the Open Hearth Foundation annual Gal? But is in DC. It's a Pagan fundraiser, Black Tie Optional . . .

Keezers, you mean? Great place, and I love their history (sort of a pawnshop for the rich harvard kids to get more pocket money by selling off their duds, back when kids went to school with fancy duds).

But getting and owning a tux is still logistically easier than the girl's clothing shenanigans.

well, yes, because it's simply not done for a woman to wear the same dress more than once, regularly. Why is that so?

Not fair to them in my opinion.

Yes, Keezer's.

Love it, good deals, and I bought new . . .

Well, as you've mentioned, they do actually *sell* tuxes. ;-) I know several people who own their own. They do actually *sell* tuxes, you know. ;-) I know several people who own their own. I even know where to find the best deal in the Cambridge area.

And, um, when will I ever wear an evening gown again? Prior to this, I haven't worn one since high school.

When you get home, I hereby charge you with finding (or hosting) an event at which I may wear this fabulous dress again.

simply go out and rent a tux

It's true. I've been unimpressed with the results of rental places' fitting jobs, though (on guys, not me). I've started really appreciating formalwear that fits right on guys.

hmm. the one time I had to have a dress altered to be in a wedding I just had my mom do it (well, she pinned it for me and I did the sewing, since it's nigh impossible to pin a dress while you're wearing it). admittedly I already owned the shoes from a pervious wedding I was in.

Yeah, I seriously thought about that. The necessary alterations are within my capabilities, but I'd need to find someone to help me do the pinning, and besides, the one thing I do not have between now and the date of this event is time.

So paying for alterations it is.

I can commiserate with you. I think we need to head to the Famous Footwear (or whatever it's called) at the toxic waste dump.

Alas, I had to order my undergarments to work with my dress.

I hereby charge [livejournal.com profile] pierceheart with giving us all a reason to dress up when he returns. *bweg*

Or, perhaps, a formal welcome home party. Yeah. That might be nice.
