After many months of me complaining about the lack of inexpensive pot roasts (or, indeed, any pot roasts at all) at my local grocery store, they finally appeared last week. So this morning, the crockpot came up from the basement, and in went the roast, some of the root veggies that Boston Organics has so kindly been sending us, a couple of bottle of nice beer remaining from a recent party, and more or less the last dregs of the fresh herbs from the herb garden.

Dinner will be waiting for us when we get home. Yum!

We have a new ice cream maker attachment (thanks, [livejournal.com profile] hak42!).

We have a citrus juicer (thanks, [livejournal.com profile] tytso!).

We have abundant purple basil growing on the front porch (thanks, Lyman Estate Greenhouses!).

And so, what else was there to do?

Purple Basil Sorbet!

It was an experiment, to be sure. I kinda like it. I don't think [livejournal.com profile] terse_scribe does, though. Vivid color, heavy basil aroma, herb-y basil flavor. Not really intended as a dessert, I'm sure...probably intended as a palate cleanser. Makes me want to prepare a multi-course gourmet meal, just so that I can make use of such a thing. :-)

Do you have a garden? Are you growing tomatoes? Will you be overrun with green ones when the first frost is upon us in a few weeks?

I'm looking for a bunch of green tomatoes, so that I can make mock mincemeat (i.e. "green tomato mincemeat"). I used my last jar last year, and for me, Thanksgiving just wouldn't be the same without a mincemeat pie.

I'll pick up the tomatoes from you, and if you're interested, I'll give you a jar of the resulting mock mincemeat.

Alternatively, if you know of a place where I can actually purchase green tomatoes, I'd be interested in hearing about that, too.
