Do you have a garden? Are you growing tomatoes? Will you be overrun with green ones when the first frost is upon us in a few weeks?

I'm looking for a bunch of green tomatoes, so that I can make mock mincemeat (i.e. "green tomato mincemeat"). I used my last jar last year, and for me, Thanksgiving just wouldn't be the same without a mincemeat pie.

I'll pick up the tomatoes from you, and if you're interested, I'll give you a jar of the resulting mock mincemeat.

Alternatively, if you know of a place where I can actually purchase green tomatoes, I'd be interested in hearing about that, too.

I have some tomatoes that are currently still green. Will let you know if they stay that way.

I also have a bunch of tomatillos from our farm share, if those would be useful.

Well, I don't want to take tomatoes away from you that you'll use, but if the end of the season leaves you with green ones, or if you're otherwise overrun, I'll happily take them off your hands.

I think the tomatillos wouldn't be useful if they're ripe (even if they are green in their ripe state). I don't know a lot about tomatillos, however.

I don't think I'll be able to embark on my mincemeat-making venture until at least next week, but I will do my best to work around your (and your tomatoes') schedule.

Thanks!

What are the chances of you posting the green tomato mincemeat recipe? I may have some green tomatoes from the farm in a couple of weeks.

These days, I use the recipe out of Canning and Preserving Without Sugar, which is sweetened entirely by apples, dried fruits (like raisins and currants) and date sugar. This one suits me quite well, but it's not overly sweet. If you like your pies sweet, I'd suggest that you add some sugar to it.

I also have my grandmother's old-fashioned recipe, which is what we used when I was a kid. That one calls for loads of sugar and loads of cider vinegar.

I could post them both.

If you think you'll have extra green tomatoes, let me know. :-)

If there's green tomatoes left, I'll let you know. Back when I was living in Arlington, I used to hit up a few of the farm stands for green tomatoes. They'd give them to me at the end of the season.

Please post both recipes. I'm not big on sweet pies, I usually cut the amount of sugar in any recipes by half and sometimes more.

I sent mail to you and my mother-in-law at your work addresses. I believe they are overrun with green tomatoes and since you work with each other, I'll let you two figure it out.

I'd been wondering who this [livejournal.com profile] gmpe person was, and now I guess I know. :-)

I almost asked your mother-in-law, actually, but for some reason decided not to. I guess my initial instincts were correct.

I hope you're doing well...stop by and say hi if you ever come by the office!
