A quiz

If you were attending the production of A Midsummer Night's Dream, which is being performed by Theaterwork in Santa Fe, where would you go to see the performance.

Now, this isn't really a fair quiz, because you can probably guess in my asking that it's a trick question. So, due to that, I'll give you a hint: the play is not being performed at the only address that appears on the theater company's web site.

Yup. We went to the theater where their "directions" link directed us. We assumed that that was the James A. Little Theater, since we had no reason to think otherwise. The parking lot was empty (except for one other car pulling out as we arrived...maybe in the same boat?), and the doors to the theater were locked. The sign on the door advertised a "current" production that ran in March and April.

We sat in bafflement for a good long time, then I phoned [livejournal.com profile] meadmaker and asked him to use his great Google skills to get us an address. He was kind enough to help.

When we got home, we checked the web site again. We were not on crack.

Actually, this is remarkably Santa-Fe-like. Everyone assumes that everyone else Just Knows where things are located, and they don't bother to give an address or directions. There are a number of classes and things I would have happily attended if I could have found directions.

The most common directions by far are "It's on Cerrillos." Cerrillos Road is a really long road, going across all of Santa Fe, and in fact continuing all the way to Albuquerque, 60 miles or more away. It's an urban-sprawl strip-mall haven, filled with businesses.

"Where are you located?"
"Oh, we're on Cerrillos."

Sometimes, if you're lucky, and you press the issue, you can get them to say, "Oh, go down Foo Street, and turn on Cerrillos. It'll be a few blocks down." No, they don't say which way to turn on Cerrillos. It never occurs to them that they should.

This is not something I've encountered only a couple of times. This is something that I encounter more often than not. On the rare occasions when I actually get normal directions, telling me where to turn, how many blocks, how many lights, etc., I jump for joy.

I would've gone to:

James A. Little Theatre
1060 Cerrillos Road
Santa Fe

I would've gone there because the theatre company lists a theatre name. Normally, if the show is in-house, they don't list a location.

Looking at their 2005-2006 season on their Web site, they had two shows at their location, and two at other locations -- the aforementioned play, and another which was done at yet another different theatre.
