My cookbooks, and other boxes of books, were shipped media mail.

The large cookbook box arrived with 3 books in it, not full.

This box also contained my copy of On Food and Cooking and related things. It contained a sourdough cookbook given to me by a friend, with dozens of post-its (the real gift) with commentary about an impressive percentage of the recipes. It had my German cookbooks, collected from various places in my travels, with an amazing Kastanientorte recipe I hadn't even tried yet. It may have contained all of my brewing and herbalism books as well.

And now they're gone.

Oh, that is AWFUL. :-(

I hope your other boxes arrive okay. Ugh. I can't imagine how I'd feel if my precious BOOKS vanished in the mail.

Yeah, we had that problem with books we shipped when [livejournal.com profile] miss_chance's mother died.

For reference of other people shipping books: the official maximum weight for a package sent media mail is 70 pounds. However, all boxes over 40 pounds will be unofficially dropped off trucks until they weigh under 40 pounds. This may or may not be part of a campaign to get the weight limit reduced so that postal workers won't hurt themselves. Remember, media mail is a UDP service.

That is so awful. I shipped many boxes of books, both via UPS and USPS, when I moved from NYC to SF and didn't have a problem. But I don't know what I'd do in your situation. It's so painful to lose things that can't be replaced, that have meaning for us.

I'm sorry this happened to you.

On the bright side, they are only things. Nobody died.

Out of the 40 I shipped when I moved, only 4 were media mail. 2 came perfect. One came dinged but with everything. The other, well, a few weeks later, about half of it showed up.

I lost my physics texts (not that vital, but irritating), and a random group of other books that I still haven't completely categorized. I just chalk it up to the box each time I can't find something.

Anyway, this is less to solicit sympathy than to say, you have both my sympathy and empathy, and I do understand. That sucks :/
