So, I return to my office with my sandwich for lunch. I see that there are nuts in the bread. I call back the restaurant, to ask if these nuts are walnuts (to which I'm very allergic).

"Well, of course. It's a multi-grain bread."
"Walnuts aren't a grain."
"Oh. Well, our bread has all sorts of nuts in it, like sunflower seeds, and..."
"Sunflower seeds aren't nuts."
"Oh. Well, I'm no expert..."

Nope, apparently you aren't, Mr. Sandwich Guy.

I pointed out that at the same time I ordered my sandwich, I also ordered a brownie, and made a huge point about asking whether it had walnuts.

"Oh yeah...I remember taking your order. I was going to say something about nut allergies...but then I forgot."

He also went on to explain that their breads change all the time, and even if I've ordered a particular sandwich from them before, and it was fine, this is no guarantee whatsoever that it will be walnut-free the next time.

Lovely.

GAH!!!!!
What?!?!?!?!
It makes NO SENSE! Walnuts aren't a grain, and sunflower seeds aren't nuts. And if you are asking about walnuts, it's certain you are concerned about them. Geez!

I had a similar thing happen last week for lunch. I asked for water with no lemon, and they put a lemon on my plate with the meal. Oy.

Clearly this place needs to give a test to their applicants:

  1. Walnuts are:

    1. a grain
    2. a root vegetable
    3. a flower
    4. a nut

  2. sunflower seeds are

    1. a root vegetable
    2. a seed
    3. a nut
    4. a flower

  3. If a customer states that she has an allergy to nuts, you should:

    1. Say, "Oh yeah. I met someone like that once. I think she died of anaphil-something-or-other."
    2. Say, "Good thing you're not a squirrel."
    3. Be sympathetic and offer her a tissue.
    4. Not serve her anything that has nuts.

Sounds like a typical clueless person. Many people just don't get food allergies at all. You'd think with all the reports in the news about people dying from peanut allergies and the like they'd pay more attention. I'm allergic to mushrooms and always tell the person waiting on me of my allergy. More than once I've had some one serve me food that has mushrooms in it. When I tell the waiter, "this dish has mushrooms in it. They say, "Oh, you mean all mushrooms." Duh, yea. I mean all mushrooms
